Prayer and Discussion – Monthly Meeting in the Reading Room – Mother Church Membership

The Reading Room is conducting a series of prayer focus meetings about Church.  The discussion topics will be drawn from The Manual of The Mother Church.  Come and join us!

Meeting: Thursday 28th November 12.30 to 1.30pm

Where:  Reading Room, 128 Gawler Place

This Month’s Focus:

Membership of The Mother Church

October’s research and discussion uncovered some wonderful insights for those who attended on Thursday 24th October.  Everyone certainly went away with more to consider in relation to the spiritual idea expressed as the Office of the Board of Directors.  We have undertaken for the next month to pray more deeply to support this fundamental part of Church.  At the start of November’s meeting, there will be a short time to share the inspiration from our prayerful work.

This coming month – on Thursday November 28th, we will tackle what membership of The Mother Church means. Provisions for membership are covered in Articles 4 to 7 and Article 8 is for the “Guidance of Members”. We will consider what responsibilities membership brings and what the benefits could be.  Is The Mother Church like other democratic organisations where the members elect officeholders?  Do members get a say about how things are run?  If not – why not?  There is certainly a lot to consider when we see how Membership forms part of Church.

As usual, there are a lot of research points available for you to start your in depth study – and there is also a quiet supportive atmosphere in the Reading Room for you to delve more deeply into this question using all the available resources.  Everyone is welcome! (We are open 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.)

At our meeting, we will spend some time sharing what we have each discovered about the the questions surrounding membership of The Mother Church.  The meeting will cover:

  • spiritual inspiration from prayerful work on last month’s topic;

  • discussion of the relevant Manual provisions (not limited to the Articles already mentioned) relating to membership and its responsibilities;

  • discussion of any articles etc which may have been found to broaden our consideration of the issues of membership;

For the purposes of this meeting, in  the allotted hour, we will be looking mainly at the broad based questions about membership.  It is likely that at a later meeting, we may more deeply consider the specific requirements in Article 8.

Bring your lunch, your research, a willingness to share and your prayerful thought.  If you would like to attend the meeting via phone, please contact the Reading Room up to the day before the meeting to advise of your intention.  The meeting will last for approximately one hour.

If you have any questions, ring the Reading Room on 8223 3230.
